Got a call over the weekend from long time friend and client Chip Drayton, He wanted to know if I was down to take him and Gina fishing for False Albacore here in RI. To date Gina had yet to experience the joy of landing one of these fish let alone on light tackle.
The offshore forecast was ass, and it had been a while since I had been out after these guys ,so I said why not. My vessel is having service done to be ready for a few extreme Bluefin trips I have left to do up no...rth, so I hit up ECC Mate Brandon Lake to see if he was down to run on the 21 regulator.
With Brandon in met up with Chip and Gina in Pt Judith around 5 and set out into some cold nasty fog. We scoped around inshore to see if we could get in on any surface feeding action before the fleet came out and ran the fish down. Checked the usual grounds from deep hole to Bonnet and got no love. These areas were on fire up until the weekend. I remembered hearing a report from Capt Lou that there was a good bite further offshore, so we pushed out a little further.

After running with the most social school of porpoise that I have ever seen for a few miles, we set up and started fishing. 5 minutes into it “Success” Gina was tight on here first Albie, and the look on her face was priceless. I’ll never forget the first time I connected with one of these fish. It put the pelagic needle in my vein and I haven’t been able to shake it since lol, so its always great to watch someone enjoy this species for the first time.
A total success we were able to boat over a dozen fish, not a bad trip for a first timer. Chip got in on some of the action in between Gina’s fish to break in a few of his new light tackle spinning set ups. The day was a total blast even had some extremely aggressive surface strikes, watched one streak on the sonar before nailing a Jig and had Gina get completely spooled to the knot on one of her ultra light setups (We turned towards the fish for a min so that she was able to regain some wraps and was able to successfully land her fish too!)
On the way back in we ran into to a complete rage about 2 miles of Point Judith just outside the insanity fleet that were chasing a few schools that were trying to pop up. We got Gina tight on one more fish before calling it a day!
Another great day on the water with great people, chasing some little guys that to this day I still have a lot of respect for.
I only had time to snap a few pics but once chip uploads some of his footage I’ll do an update.
