After one of the most successful May Striped Bass seasons to date, The start of June proves to be no exception to the rule. On May 31st, Capts Jack and Lou took a quick shot out into the upper bay to scout for a charter that was booked for Friday. The before we even got to the usual bait locations we ran into a large school of bait just after getting on plane out of the marina. We loaded up quickly, and based on our location, had to make a quick judgement call as to whether or not we'd be heading north or south to fish for the day. While deep inside I want to see what the south had to offer. We didn't have a lot of time to work with we decided to head north were we'd be virtually guaranteed get action. Upon arrival, we found that many of the locations in "Skinny water" we very light on marks. We fished some structure for a while and managed to pull out a few small fish in the 28 to 29 inch range. Frustrated by the conditions we decided to slide out into the deeper water and target some of the fish that we were marking in 50ft of water. This turned out to be the right call! In less than an hour we limited out on fish in the high teens up to 38inches, just before the tide slacked off on us and the bite shut down. So on June 1st, When two of Johnston's Bravest, Anthony Rainone and Dominic ARusso, booked us for a trip; We were already dialed in to the change in action. Focusing on changes in contour and deep water stucture we enjoyed continuous action on plus sized upper bay fish ranging from 18lbs into the high 30's. Many of the fish landed were the result of double hook ups, making for some intense and exciting action.
After getting it done on bass, we headed further south into the bay in search of some light tackle topwater action. Did we ever find it! About a mile away from the marina we ran into some massive Bluefish, terrorizing a nervous school of menhaden. We managed to hook up with three of them on jerkbaits, which provided us with screaming drag runs, tailwalks and even some complete 3ft in the air back flips. A great way to wrap up a fun day on the water.
